My name Nigel Dudley and I am a writer and broadcaster. I plan to use my Deceiving Us blog to explain how people in power, whether politicians or business leaders, deceive us by subtle – and not so subtle – distortions of language and the people they use to present their case in the media. My first blogs set out the methods they use and subsequent ones will highlight examples of what is done.
And these words from George Orwell in 1946 will always be my guiding light. “The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one’s real and one’s declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink.”
